Dealing With Ageism In The Workplace

By Christine King

If you ever been caught in a predicament where you apply for the position that you know you are 100% qualified for, and yet the job was given to someone else simply because they are younger, you are not alone. This type of thing has been happening for decades and is common practice across the board. The time given to its is ageism in the workplace. This is basically a common practice of declining all the people for the position purely based on their age.

People who are over a certain age are basically subjected to this type of treatment and discrimination. So if you are above middle age or probably even approaching it, you stand to be discriminated against when applying for a job. Even though this may not be the reason given to why you application was unsuccessful.

So what basically happens is that a position is advertised and then you get a number of applicants applying for that specific role. Ultimately, the applicants will range and different in age and qualifications as well. Ultimately, when it comes to choosing the most suitable candidate, most companies go with the younger applicant. This could be due to stereotypes related to growing older.

So it doesn't matter what industry you are applying at what company you are applying at for that matter as well. Ultimately, this is simply a stereotype that is attached to aging or the aging process in general. So all the people always seen as less fit than younger ones.

This happens all the time. It's not something that is just only now recently occurred, it is a trend that has taken place for many decades. However, the fact that older people have started to accept it and don't even apply for positions any longer because they know the definitely won't get it based on the age is something that needs to stop.

One of the things that people can do is basically try to get the laws in the countries changed. Lately the laws regarding the mandatory age for retirement has changed in certain countries and this is helping the employment process when it comes to middle-age people seeking a job.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter whether you are young or old. All that matters is that irrespective of what your age group is, you still need to support and provide for your families. So the stigma that younger people are somehow better suited for the position because of the age is something that has nearly placed more experienced and qualified individuals on the back burner.

So in an effort to try and count this will prevent this from happening, they are various things that people can do. In some countries they have implemented anti-discrimination laws which basically disallows anyone being declined for a certain position due to they age. Lots of other countries have also implemented or abolished mandatory retirement ages. Ultimately, this is all intended to prevent older people from being discriminated against.
