Establishing The Right Accommodations For ADHD Students In School

By Martha Roberts

No matter what condition somebody is in, whether physically or mentally, education remains to be significant. People with attention disorders are no exception, meaning that schools have to find ways to offer appropriate Accommodations for ADHD learners. Failure to do this would see many of them drop out and miss on important life skills that would see them become successful individuals in future.

Learners with ADHD condition are easily distracted. Somebody passing outside near the window is enough to take their attention. To help this, teachers can try positioning the students away from the door or window. Most preferably they should be seated at the front of the class near the teacher. The idea is to keep them very far from distractions during class time.

Other problems teachers face with such kinds of scholars is being restless and talkative. To restrict their movements, class rules should be set. There should be punishments set in place for any rule broken. In case of a discussion, they should be given specific time periods to express themselves. This creates equality. To keep them on the right track, they should be offered incentives any time they complete a lesson without hitches. That motivates them to keep behaving accordingly.

In most cases, these learners fail to qualify for the next class as their information retention power is low. With the right approaches, teachers can help them boost their memories and easily advance to the next lessons or class. Using colorful charts to present data and information is amongst the several strategies that can be used to help them easily remember information and score acceptable points.

To make the lessons more effective, the teachers need to be predictable with them. For instance, before commencing the lesson, the teacher can send out a signal to notify the students that the lesson is about to begin. This keeps them alert. When teaching, give them the information systematically, starting with the hardest to grasp and concluding with the easiest. Repeat the information until they fully grasp it.

Every now and then strategies may be put in place, yet the students still fail to recognize any positive change. Educators are required to carry continuous assessments of their progress, not only in exams but during class time as well. The students may improve faster if they are engaged in class activities like problem solving and reading. They get to remember better, maintain focus and build on their confidence gradually.

In some occasions parents may not know what their children are exposed to at school. At the end of the term, they expect their children to have high grades. Teachers therefore have a huge responsibility of finding the right approach to cater for all students.

The parents also have a significant role to play to help their affected children. As a parent you know your child. If he or she suffers from attention disorder, notify the teacher so that solutions can be sought for immediately. If the classroom accommodation does not seem to improve the child, solutions might need to be sourced for somewhere else.
