Reputable Waco OBGYN Explains What Happens During Pelvic Examinations

By Barbara Edwards

Any OBGYN will tell you for free that you owe yourself the favor of getting pelvic exams every year. Unfortunately, even women who are considered to be the bold type are never stoked enough for what transpires during sessions. The tests would involve getting the outer genitalia inspected. A Waco OBGYN must also inspect the insides of the vagina to understand the condition of the uterus as well as the ovaries.

Pelvic exams are important because your doctor would be able to identify potentially harmful conditions such as infections or cancerous tumors. He or she could also identify skin conditions or concerns that cause infertility. Ideally, should to brace yourself for a session if you are pregnant, you need cervical cancer screening, you have unusual discharge, you have menstrual irregularities of you have been trying to get a baby in vain.

If you have never undergone a pelvic exam, chances are that you could get anxious for no good reason. It is normal for women to be nervous about the sessions, though you do not have anything to worry about. Before you know it, the specialist will be wrapping up the session.

Patients do not have to do much in terms of preparing themselves for the tests. Just take your normal shower or bath in the morning and do not use hygiene products that are scented. You could go ahead and groom your pubic hair, though this is not necessary.

During manual examinations, your OBGYN will provide you with a gown. You therefore need to undress from the waist down and put it on. From this point, you should lay on the examination table on your back. You will also get special stirrups on either end of the table where you can place your feet. This position makes it easier for a specialist to evaluate the state of your vulva and determine whether there are abnormalities or abrasions that should be addressed.

From this point, the expert will proceed to do the Pap smear procedure. Using a metal or plastic speculum, the doctor will spread out your vagina walls and scoop cell samples from your cervix. Speculums are duckbill in shape, though this should not intimidate you. Inserting the tool may cause discomfort, though you will not experience any pain, especially if you do not have other underlying concerns.

The importance of collecting samples during a pap smear procedure should not be overlooked. These samples are used to test for different conditions that are known to affect the reproductive area. These conditions include sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer. Any woman that is sexually active should get at least one Pap smear every year.

In the course of the checkups, your OBGYN may also do several additional checks. He or she could perform rectal examinations as well as breast exams. Any issues that are identified will then be addressed and you would also get a chance to raise any sexual concerns that you have, or even discuss matters regarding your reproductive health or birth control methods.
